The International Day of Yoga (IDY) was established through a 2014 resolution that was proposed by India and ultimately received the support of 175 member states of the UN. India’s initiative was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself.

International Yoga Day 2025 Celebrations In India
International Yoga Day is celebrated with an unparalleled zeal across India, with events organised at all levels, from local to national. The theme for International Yoga Day 2025 is “Yoga for One Earth, One Health”. This year, the “Yoga Sangam” initiative will be at the heart of the International Yoga Day celebration in India. The initiative will feature mass yoga demonstrations at 1 lakh locations across the country.
How Different Countries Celebrate International Yoga Day
US
The US, having a sizeable Indian diaspora, is one of the countries that celebrate International Day of Yoga with great enthusiasm. Indian diplomatic missions across the US organise numerous events to mark the occasion.
In 2024, the Indian Embassy had organised its IDY event at the picturesque Wharf overlooking the Potomac River in Washington DC.
Saudi Arabia
Once known for its strict interpretation of Islam, Saudi Arabia has now emerged as a surprising global destination for the promotion of yoga. International Yoga Day celebrations in the country are spearheaded by the Indian Embassy in Riyadh and the Saudi Yoga Committee, which operates under the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.

The 2024 International Yoga Day celebration in Saudi Arabia was headlined by an event jointly organised by the Indian Embassy, the Saudi Yoga Committee, and Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Sports at Riyadh’s Prince Faisal Bin Fahad Olympic Complex.
UAE
The UAE, with its vast Indian expat community, is one of the countries where International Yoga Day witnesses widespread participation. This year, yoga sessions are being conducted at several iconic locations across the country in the run-up to International Day of Yoga.

On June 21, more than 35 iconic locations across the UAE are set to host mass yoga sessions, according to Ahmed Ibrahim, President of the UAE Yoga Committee and Vice Chairman of the Asian Yogasana Federation. These landmark locations include the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Frame.
The IDY 2025 events throughout the UAE are expected to draw over 30,000 participants, Ibrahim said, per Gulf News.
