Tucked away in the scenic landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, Lahaul Valley has seen a remarkable rise in tourism in recent years. As travellers seek more meaningful and offbeat experiences, one local woman, Sushma, has turned her ancestral mud house in Thangthang village into a cultural haven. Far from the glass walls of five-star hotels, her traditional home offers visitors an authentic taste of rural Lahaul, of its heritage, cuisine, and way of life.
Unlike modern accommodations, this mud house is an authentic, decades-old dwelling once inhabited by local villagers. Located approximately one kilometre above Gondla, the site offers guests an immersive cultural experience against the backdrop of the valley’s striking natural beauty
While many have turned to hotel construction to capitalise on the tourism boom, Sushma took a different path. Three years ago, she transformed her 80-year-old ancestral home into a tourist stay.
Visitors not only enjoy the serene landscape but also take part in local life, cooking traditional dishes, working in the fields, and sampling Kullu and Lahaul cuisine.
Sushma’s journey into tourism began after leaving her job as a Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) agent in Kullu. Sensing an opportunity, she returned to her village and launched her hospitality venture with support from her family.
Today, she manages bookings through social media platforms and Airbnb, offering both homestays and camping options to guests.
Her efforts have drawn attention for their focus on sustainable, culturally rich tourism, giving travellers a chance to experience the heart of Lahaul in its truest form.
