Why Conjunctivitis Peaks During the Monsoon Months?

Conjunctivitis cases spike during the monsoon due to increased humidity, allergens, and poor eye hygiene.

By staying mindful and vigilant throughout the rainy months, we can protect our eyes and prevent the spread of conjunctivitis.

Conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye,” is an inflammation of the conjunctiva—the transparent membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner eyelids. It can be triggered by bacterial or viral infections, as well as allergic reactions. During the monsoon season, the risk of spreading this infection increases due to higher exposure to allergens, sharing of personal items like towels, and contact with polluted rainwater.

“As an ophthalmologist, I’ve found that the monsoon season is when conjunctivitis is most prevalent. The increased humidity and moisture create ideal conditions for the growth of bacteria and viruses, making eye infections more common during this time of year,” says Dr. Ajay Sharma, Founder & CMD, Eye-Q Super Speciality Hospital.

Common symptoms include redness, pain, a watery or pus-filled discharge, and a gritty sensation in the eyes. Some individuals may also experience blurred vision or light sensitivity. While most cases of conjunctivitis resolve on their own within a week, it is crucial to consult a doctor to identify the cause and receive appropriate treatment.

Taking precautions during the monsoon season is essential. “I advise patients to avoid touching or rubbing their eyes, wash their hands regularly, and refrain from sharing personal items,” says Dr. Sharma. “Wearing protective eyewear outdoors and maintaining proper hygiene with contact lenses can further reduce the risk.”

Self-medicating is strongly discouraged. Over-the-counter eye drops may not address the root cause and could potentially worsen the condition. A proper diagnosis and expert treatment from an eye care specialist are key to protecting your vision during this vulnerable season.

By staying mindful and vigilant throughout the rainy months, we can protect our eyes and prevent the spread of conjunctivitis.
