Tech entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan has acquired a private island near Singapore as part of his ambitious plan to create a ‘Network State’ — a decentralised, digital-first society focused on technology, innovation, and community-driven living. Once viewed as a theoretical concept, the project is now taking physical shape.
“We got an island. That’s right. Through the power of Bitcoin, we now have a beautiful island near Singapore where we’re building the Network School,” Srinivasan posted on X.
The Network School: Tech, Fitness, and Personal Growth
At the heart of this initiative is The Network School, a three-month residential programme designed for select participants from around the world. The school blends emerging technologies like AI and blockchain with entrepreneurship and wellness, offering a mix of gym sessions, workshops, and collaborative projects.
Participants are handpicked based on ambition and unconventional thinking. The goal is to create a community focused on innovation, personal transformation, and real-world impact.
‘Oasis for Gym Rats and Startup Founders’
Content creator Nick Peterson, one of the early residents, described the experience as a live experiment in nation-building. “I’ve been living in this real-life experiment called the Network School, where we are kind of testing what creating a new nation would feel like,” he said. He called the island ‘an oasis for gym rats and startup founders.’
A Vision Outlined in ‘The Network State’
Srinivasan’s long-term goal is to develop a global, borderless society that begins as an online community and gradually acquires physical land, eventually seeking diplomatic recognition. This vision was laid out in his 2022 book The Network State, which proposes an alternative model to traditional governance in the digital age.
He says the initiative is designed to foster “win-and-help-win” communities grounded in truth, health, and wealth.
Who Is Balaji Srinivasan?
Of Tamil origin, Srinivasan is an Indian-American entrepreneur and investor. He holds multiple engineering degrees from Stanford University and has been a prominent figure in Silicon Valley. He is the former CTO of Coinbase and co-founder of ventures such as Counsyl, Earn.com, and Teleport. He was also an early investor in Bitcoin, Ethereum, OpenSea, and Alchemy.
In 2023, he was also praised by PM Narendra Modi for his optimism about India’s investment climate.
Expansion Plans Beyond Southeast Asia
The island-based programme launched in 2024 and serves as the pilot site for what Srinivasan hopes will become a global movement. Future Network School campuses are planned in cities like Dubai, Tokyo, and Miami.
“We’re looking for remote workers, digital creators, personal trainers, developers — people who want to earn crypto, build things, burn calories, and have fun,” he said in a recent recruitment post.
