Tourists visiting Courtallam in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district were thrilled on Monday as authorities lifted the ban on bathing in waterfalls after a seven-day suspension.
Continuous rainfall in the Western Ghats had caused a sharp rise in water levels at several waterfalls, prompting officials to ban bathing from May 25 as a safety measure.
With the rain persisting for days, the restriction remained in place for a full week. However, by Sunday, the rainfall had subsided and the water flow gradually reduced. After assessing the situation, authorities decided to lift the ban after seven days, much to the delight of tourists who had been waiting eagerly to enjoy the region’s famed waterfalls.
Bathing is now allowed at all major waterfalls in the Courtallam area, including the Main Falls, Aintharuvi (Five Falls), Old Courtallam Falls, Chitharuvi, and Puliyaruvi. With the ban lifted, the tourist flow to the region has picked up once again.
Courtallam, often referred to as the ‘Spa of South India’, is a popular hill destination known for its scenic beauty and healing waters. Located in the Western Ghats, its waterfalls are believed to carry medicinal properties due to the herbs from the surrounding forests.
Tourists from across the country visit Courtallam, especially during the monsoon, to experience the therapeutic waterfalls and lush greenery. Local businesses and tourism operators have welcomed the move, hoping for a boost in tourism in the coming weeks.
