Amid the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence, several jobs—particularly in data entry and research—are under threat, with many more expected to disappear in the next 5 to 10 years. However, renowned computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as the ‘Godfather of AI’, has identified one sector that remains largely secure despite the growing influence of AI.
Geoffrey Hinton has played a pivotal role in shaping the field of AI and remains a leading voice on its ethical and societal implications. Now 77, he continues to raise concerns about the risks associated with unchecked AI development.
In a recent interview on Steven Bartlett’s podcast ‘The Diary of a CEO’, Hinton revealed that skill-based jobs, such as plumbing, are expected to remain safe from automation. He explained that while AI is disrupting industries globally, leading to concerns about job security, plumbing is an exception.
In the interview, Hinton acknowledged that plumbing might seem like an unusual example, but emphasised that such jobs are rooted in physical activity. Unlike fields like law or accounting, which rely heavily on data processing and are more susceptible to automation, plumbing involves hands-on problem-solving and complex physical tasks—areas where AI still falls short.
This, he noted, suggests that jobs requiring practical human skills are likely to remain safe from AI disruption for the foreseeable future.
