Weddings are no longer about grand venues and OTT celebrations. Couples, today, are prioritizing intimate ceremonies with interactive experiences and deeply personal touches.

DIY weddings focus on personalization and meaningful experiences.

Weddings, today, are about personalization and meaningful experiences, not just grand venues and extravagant décor. Couples want their wedding to feel like a reflection of their journey and the DIY (Do-It-Yourself) wedding approach has become a wonderful way to achieve that. Whether it’s interactive experiences or deeply personal touches, the DIY method allows couples to create a celebration that feels truly their own.

“DIY weddings are moulding how couples engage with their guests,” said Anjali Tolani, Vice President – Weddings at Tamarind. “We recently planned a wedding where the couple, both musicians, turned their reception into a live concert. Their closest friends, who happened to be fellow artists themselves, curated a three-hour musical experience just for them, featuring original compositions and covers. The bride even took the stage to perform a song she had written for the groom. In another wedding, the couple replaced a traditional guest book with a recording booth, where guests left heartfelt voice messages for the couple, sharing their best wishes and unique anecdotes that made the celebration feel more intimate. One couple, passionate about sustainability, hosted a ‘plant-a-memory’ station, where guests potted seedlings instead of receiving traditional wedding favours. These personal elements don’t just make a wedding unique; however, they create moments that resonate long after the celebrations are over.”

Personalisation is the key to a memorable wedding. Shail Doshi, Bluekrit Weddings, Mumbai, explains, “Transforming an Indian wedding into a creative and memorable experience for guests, while keeping it DIY, can be both fun and meaningful. Start by designing personalised invitations that reflect your culture and personal style. Extend this personal touch to the décor. Incorporate meaningful rituals into your ceremony, such as a personalised haldi or mehendi ceremony, and write your vows for a more intimate experience. One can also invite the elderly from an old-age home on the wedding day to seek blessings before beginning the ritual. Lastly, include interactive entertainment like wedding trivia about the couple or fun games, ensuring your guests stay engaged throughout the celebration.”

Planning a wedding is all about creating unforgettable memories for the couple and their guests. According to Nirav Thaleshwar, founder of Allegiant Events, incorporating interactive elements can elevate the guest experience. “To keep guests engaged during the festivities, a variety of live station options such as a Bangles Station, Charm Station, Perfume Bar, Bobblehead Station, Block Printing on Tote Bags, Bouquet Bar, Candle Station, and personalised photo booths can create a sense of involvement and excitement,” he explains.

This personalised touch not only makes the event memorable for the couple but also leaves a lasting impression on everyone who attends. Thaleshwar emphasises that understanding and catering to the unique desires of each couple is at the heart of wedding planning, ensuring that every celebration reflects their personality and vision.

“A DIY wedding is all about personal touches that make the celebration unique and heartfelt. Handmade invitations, whether digitally designed or handwritten, along with DIY wedding favours, make guests feel special. Creative tablescapes add warmth and charm to the setting. Even in attire, incorporating handmade elements such as embroidered initials on the bride’s veil or DIY boutonnieres for the groom and groomsmen adds a personal touch. Lastly, storytelling elements like a timeline of the couple’s journey, handwritten love notes on tables, or a memory wall filled with pictures and anecdotes infuse the wedding with sentiment and meaning, making it an unforgettable experience for all,” says Kaushik Mer, Co-founder, DS Wedding

With the rise of DIY weddings, the possibilities are endless. Couples can craft a wedding that is as visually stunning as it is deeply meaningful to them, turning their big day into an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
