Short-haul travel isn’t just a fallback anymore—it’s the moment. Indian travellers are stepping into 2025 with a clear preference for getaways that are easy to reach, high on experience, and light on visa drama. According to the India Holiday Report by Thomas Cook India and SOTC Travel, a whopping 85% of travellers are planning multiple holidays next year, a sign that the short-break culture is no longer just a trend, it’s a lifestyle.

“Indian travellers are increasingly planning multiple short holidays. Our India Holiday Report reflects this trend, with 85% of respondents aiming to double or triple their annual holidays. We’re witnessing growing interest in destinations such as Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Seychelles, the Philippines and UAE driven by proximity, ease of visa access or visa-free entry, and the appeal of immersive travel,” says Rajeev Kale, President & Country Head, Holidays, MICE, Visa, Thomas Cook (India) Limited.

Kale adds, “At Thomas Cook, our group tours and customised holidays are designed to meet this rising demand. With the launch of TravSure, we’re offering comprehensive support and financial protection—helping travellers plan with confidence in an uncertain global environment.”

“We’ve seen a clear uptick in demand for short-haul international travel across multiple customer segments—from families and millennials to honeymooners and Gen Z,”

adds S.D. Nandkumar, President & Country Head, Leisure, SOTC Travel.

Southeast Asian destinations like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia are gaining momentum. The added advantage of visa-free or simplified visa access is driving conversions, especially among spontaneous travellers planning around weekends or public holidays. Our short-haul portfolio is designed to deliver seamless and immersive experiences, enhanced further by our TravSure program,” opines Nandkumar.

Top Short-Haul Picks for 2025

Vietnam

Beyond the iconic cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, Phu Quoc is fast emerging as a preferred option for travellers seeking cleaner beaches and a quieter vibe. Mid-segment resorts and direct regional flights make it accessible, and Indian travellers enjoy visa-free entry when staying in Phu Quoc only. It’s popular among young couples and first-time international travellers seeking immersive coastal experiences.

Nepal

A close neighbour with visa-free access for Indians, Nepal charms with its breathtaking Himalayan landscapes and spiritual heritage. Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Lumbini offer options like nature walks, monastery visits, and serene lake retreats—perfect for couples, solo travellers, and spiritual seekers.

Bhutan

Favoured for its pristine beauty and peaceful way of life, Bhutan does not require a visa for Indian travellers—just a Sustainable Development Fee. Destinations like Thimphu, Paro, and Punakha are ideal for a 4–5 day cultural and nature-driven escape.

Thailand

While Bangkok and Pattaya continue to attract tourists, destinations like Phuket and Krabi are stealing the spotlight. These regions offer everything from marine adventures to culinary experiences, making them ideal for mid- and premium-segment leisure travellers.

Malaysia & Singapore

Still strong on the family and monsoon traveller radar, these countries boast reliable infrastructure, indoor-heavy attractions, and streamlined visa processes. Their popularity spikes during school holidays and MICE travel periods.

Japan

Indian travellers are increasingly exploring autumn travel (October–November) for the vibrant fall foliage. Cities like Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka offer culturally rich experiences with efficient intercity connectivity—ideal for multi-city itineraries beyond the cherry blossom season.

South Korea

Fuelled by the K-wave, South Korea is high on the bucket list for Gen Z and millennials. Seoul, Busan, and Jeju Island are popular for their vibrant nightlife, shopping, and K-culture immersion.

Kazakhstan & Uzbekistan

Central Asia’s rising stars offer cost-effective, culturally rich holidays with easy e-visa access and expanding flight connectivity. Great for first-time travellers or those seeking something different from the usual circuit.

Sri Lanka

Back on the radar, Sri Lanka is a dual delight of spirituality and beaches. With short cruises from Indian ports, the country is perfect for weekend getaways or cruise extensions, especially during the monsoon.

UAE (Dubai & Abu Dhabi)

Always evolving, the UAE is leading the charge in gaming tourism, theme parks, and luxury dining. Easy visas, frequent flights, and a wide range of experiences make it ideal for families, couples, and incentive travel.

Mauritius

A top contender for a 5–6 day tropical escape during India’s monsoon, Mauritius provides visa-free access, luxury resorts, and scenic activities like snorkelling, dolphin watching, and sunset cruises—especially attractive to honeymooners and families.
