Ron Howard just opened up about his bond with Henry Winkler and if they got along right away while working on Happy Days.
In a talk with PEOPLE magazine at the WSJ Future of Everything event on Wednesday, May 28, at The Glasshouse in New York City, the 71-year-old American filmmaker and actor, who played Richie in the 1974 classic sitcom, reflected on his amazing bond with Winkler, who depicted the role of Fonzie.
Howard said, “We clicked. We — Henry Winkler and I — clicked immediately, on a kind of professional level, but I also looked up to him.”
The Da Vinci Code star went on to share that the one thing he liked about the 79-year-old American actor and film producer was that he was very different from other Hollywood people he knew then.
Howard stated, “Henry’s a few years older than I am. Yale educated, and he looked at acting in a way that was — it wasn’t Hollywood.”
Expanding on this, he explained, “It was a little more intellectual. It was theatre-based, and that was new to me. But more than anything, we just got along beautifully and worked well together.”
It is pertinent to mention that their friendship grew stronger over many years and Henry Winker helped get Ron Howard’s 1982 movie Night Shift “greenlit.”
