Olivia Rodrigo on Saturday recently used her massive Instagram following to voice her support for protesters amid ongoing crackdown against immigrants.
The singer shared her thoughts on the crisis and said she stands for “our right to freedom of speech and freedom to protest.”
She then shared a picture of a placard from the ongoing protest with a crossed-out crown and the words (not)”in our USA, dismissing “monarchial control” and demanding respect for democracy.
The photo of the crossed-out crown on the placard drew parallels to recent events in the UK, where the anti-monarchy group Republic staged a protest outside Buckingham Palace during the Trooping the Colour parade on June 14, 2025.
The event, marking King Charles official birthday, saw demonstrators chant “Not My King” and wave banners, criticizing the royal family’s relevance.
The protest coincided with the parade’s military pomp, which Republic labeled a “superficial cover for a corrupt institution.”
King Charles and Prince William, who participated in the ceremony wearing “unearned” military ranks, faced particular scrutiny from protesters advocating for the monarchy’s abolition.
Rodrigo’s post, though focused on local issues, seemed to symbolize a rejection of hierarchical power, mirroring the UK protesters’ demands for an elected head of state.
