Storing potatoes and onions during the rainy season is a significant challenge for farmers. Due to the risk of spoilage, many are compelled to sell their produce at low prices. However, with proper storage, they can wait for better market rates post-monsoon and increase their earnings. A simple and innovative method adopted by a farmer in Madhya Pradesh is now offering a cost-effective solution.

Sagar-based farmer Akash Chaurasia has repurposed his cowshed into a storage space for potatoes and onions. He built an 8-foot-high bamboo rack in the walking area of the cowshed. These racks allow for proper air circulation, facilitated by fans installed on all sides. The elevation also prevents moisture from reaching the produce during heavy rains.

Akash states that even if the stored produce is not touched for four months, it remains fresh. The structure functions like a multi-storey rack system, allowing farmers to store a large quantity in one place. When market prices rise, the produce can be sold for better profits, reducing the chances of loss.

He explains that bamboo sheds already have vertical supports for the roof, so building racks requires minimal effort. Farmers just need to split a few bamboo poles to create a frame, cover it with mesh or fabric, and place the vegetables on top. This design ensures airflow from all directions—above and below.

The best part of this method is that it is cost-free. Once constructed, the storage setup can be used for many years. It does not require any special equipment or major investment, making it a practical solution for small and marginal farmers.

By adopting such low-cost innovations, farmers can protect their harvest during the monsoon and increase their income by selling at the right time.
