Muharram 2025 Date: Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, began on June 27, 2025, following the moon sighting on June 26 in India, confirmed by the Masjid-e-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee. It is considered the second holiest month in Islam after Ramadan and is a time to remember Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, and mourn his martyrdom.
Shia Muslims observe this month by mourning his martyrdom through processions, poetry recitations, and acts of self-flagellation. Sunni Muslims mark the occasion by fasting, praying, and giving to charity.
The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, will be observed on Sunday, July 6. However, the exact date of Ashura is still subject to moon sighting and has not been officially confirmed.
When Is Ashura And Why Is It Important?

According to Islamic Relief, the day marks the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain in the Battle of Karbala. It also commemorates the day Prophet Musa (Moses) and the Children of Israel were saved by Allah from Pharaoh and his army.
Many Muslims fast on the 9th of Muharram as a preparation for Ashura, and if they miss fasting on the 9th, they can also fast on the 11th of Muharram.
Ashura: What It Means for Sunni and Shia Muslims
For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is a day of gratitude and celebration, marking the moment the Prophet Moses parted the Red Sea and the Israelites were saved. They observe the day with optional fasting and expressions of thankfulness.
In contrast, Shia Muslims see Ashura as a solemn day of mourning. They commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam, who was killed along with his family and followers in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE by the forces of the Umayyad ruler Yazid ibn Mu’awiya.
Will Schools And Banks Remain Closed?
On the day of Muharram, all government offices, banks, post offices, schools, and many private businesses will remain closed across various states and Union Territories.
States with large Muslim populations, like West Bengal, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, are expected to issue specific updates closer to the date. In addition, special observances and events are expected in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
Parents are advised to check local school notices for confirmation. Additionally, trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will be suspended on Muharram.
Reportedly, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has also announced a bank holiday on July 7 in several cities, including Agartala, Aizawl, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, and Thiruvananthapuram.
