Muharram 2025 Date In India: Also known as Hijri New Year or Ra’s as-Sanah al-Hijrīyah, Islamic New Year, marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar with the first day of the month of Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam. The Islamic New Year officially began on Wednesday, June 25, following the sighting of Muharram crescent moon in Saudi Arabia after Magrib prayers.
After the announcement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) declared a one-day holiday on June 27, allowing Muslims to observe the occasion. The event signifies the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his companions to Medina, leading to the establishment of the first Muslim community – Ummah.
Islamic New Year 2025: History and Significance
The Islamic New Year commemorates the Hijrah, the migration of Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, a transformational journey that led to the foundation of Islam and the first Muslim community.
The Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam, is thus recalled as the chronological and spiritual awakening of Islam. It promotes strong values based on a fresh start, harmony, unity, sacrifice and the pursuit of justice and morality.
Muslims all over the globe observe the occasion by reciting the holy book of Quran and offering prayers, fasting and seeking forgiveness. Unlike other major Islamic holidays like Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha, the Muharram is observed quietly and encourages spiritual reflection.
