Microsoft Layoffs: The latest job cuts might mainly affect customer-facing roles, as against the previous layoffs that majorly affected software engineers and product developers.

Microsoft is likely to announce the latest layoffs early this month.

Microsoft Layoffs 2025: IT giant Microsoft on Wednesday, July 2, said it is laying off about 9,000 employees, or 4% of its workforce, in the latest round of job cuts. The latest layoffs are part of Microsoft’s restructuring efforts amid AI investments.

The company began sending out layoff notices Wednesday.

This is the third round of layoffs this year, after about 6,000 jobs cuts (3% of its workforce) in May and over 300 sackings just a week after.

In a statement, Microsoft said the cuts will affect multiple teams around the world, including its sales division and its Xbox video game business.

“We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace,” the tech giant said in the statement.

According to Times of India, the latest round of job cuts will disproportionately affect customer-facing roles, as compared with the previous layoffs that mainly affected software engineers and product developers.

Microsoft employed 228,000 full-time workers as of last June, the last time it reported its annual headcount. The company said Wednesday that its latest layoffs would cut close to 4% of that workforce, which would be about 9,000 people.

Recently, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella addressed the massive job cuts at the global tech giant and said the layoffs happened due to “reorganisation rather than performance”.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Chief Commercial Officer Judson Althoff is also planning to take a two-month sabbatical. According to a spokesperson, the company’s top sales executive “will be back with his team in September”.

Last week, chipmaker Intel also reportedly started fresh job cuts with 107 employees connected to its headquarters in Santa Clara, California. The layoffs are part of a broader restructuring plan to turnaround the beleaguered company.

Intel has reportedly informed this to the stated of California through a notice, which is required under the California’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) in case of a layoff impacting 50 or more than employees in a 30-day period.
