Tired of the ever-buzzing Mall Road, endless boating queues, and selfie-hunters crowding every corner of Nainital? You’re not alone. While Nainital has long been a favourite for mountain getaways, sometimes the charm gets buried under the weight of tourism.

For those seeking solitude, unspoiled nature and a slice of slow mountain life, there’s a world beyond the hustle of Mall Road. Hidden within the Kumaon and Garhwal regions of the Himalayas are offbeat gems where the air is crisp, crowds are few and the views are just as breathtaking, if not more.

Here are five offbeat Himalayan destinations to explore:

Chaukori

Perched at 2,010 metres, Chaukori in Kumaon is known for its unreal sunrises and panoramic views of Nanda Devi and Panchachuli peaks. It’s the kind of place where you wake up early without an alarm, just to catch the golden Himalayan light. Enjoy the serene landscape of lush green pine forest and slow mountain life with the fresh air.

Pangot

Just 14 km from Nainital, Pangot is a sleepy little hamlet known for its rich birdlife and dense oak forests. Kilbury and Pangot Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary are must-visits for birdwatchers and nature photographers. Think misty mornings, chirping sounds, and forest trails instead of honking cars and tourist chatter.

Khirsu

Located in Pauri Garhwal, Khirsu is the antidote to over-tourism. Expect deodar forests, apple orchards, and views of snow-capped peaks with almost no tourist noise. It’s a peaceful escape that feels like a well-kept secret.

Pithoragarh

Often referred to as “Mini Kashmir” , Pithoragarh is a hidden treasure that offers thrilling treks, like the Milam Glacier Trek, Ralam Glacier Trek, Nanda Devi Base Camp Trek, and the Khaliya Top Trek. With snow-capped peaks like Panchachuli, Nanda Devi, Trishul, watching over, ancient forts, and trails that lead to the Indo-Tibet border, this town offers a perfect mix of peace and adventure. Don’t miss the views from Chandak Hills or the old Pithoragarh Fort.

Binsar

Located at an altitude of 7,900 feet, Binsar is a serene Himalayan hamlet known for its wildlife sanctuary and breathtaking views of peaks like Kedarnath, Nanda Devi and Trishul. Dense oak and rhododendron forests, peaceful walking trails, and minimal tourist crowds make it a perfect retreat for nature lovers and solitude seekers.
