In the holy month of Sawan, considered especially dear to Lord Shiva, the Kanwar Yatra begins from the Pratipada Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Shravan. From this day, Shiva devotees collect water from sacred rivers in a kanwar and carry it to Shiva temples, where they perform Jalabhishek (ritual water offering) on the Shivling.

According to religious beliefs, the Kanwar Yatra is undertaken for the fulfilment of wishes, success in difficult tasks, blessings of a child, protection from untimely death, and freedom from chronic diseases. Devotees walk barefoot, carrying the water, often from the Ganga or other holy rivers, on their shoulders to offer it at Shiva temples.

As per Drik Panchang, the month of Sawan will begin on Friday, 11 July 2025. The Krishna Paksha Pratipada of Shravan month begins at 2:06 AM on July 11, and ends at 2:08 AM on July 12. As per the Udaya Tithi(sunrise-based date), the month of Sawan starts from July 12.

When Does Kanwar Yatra Begin?

The 2025 Kanwar Yatra also begins on the Pratipada Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Sawan month, which falls on Friday, July 11, 2025.

This year, the Kanwar Yatra will last 13 days, from July 11 to July 23. It concludes on Sawan Shivratri, which falls on Krishna Chaturdashi. This day is considered the most auspicious for Jalabhishek. However, devotees can offer water to Lord Shiva throughout the month and earn spiritual merit.

Yatra Concludes

The Yatra concludes on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, the day of Sawan Shivratri. This is regarded as the holiest and final day of the Yatra for devotees to perform Jalabhishek.

Jalabhishek Muhurat

Devotees begin arriving at Shiva temples from Brahma Muhurat (pre-dawn) to perform Jalabhishek. The ritual can be carried out any time during the day. Rahu Kaal is not considered inauspicious for Shiva worship, as Lord Shiva is known as Mahakaal – the one beyond time.

Best Days For Jalabhishek

While every day in Sawan is considered ideal for worshipping Lord Shiva, the most auspicious days for Jalabhishek are:

  • Sawan Mondays (Somvar)
  • Sawan Pradosh Vrat
  • Sawan Shivratri

Among these, Sawan Shivratri holds special significance, second only to Mahashivratri. Devotees observe fasts, offer prayers, and perform Jalabhishek to please Lord Shiva and seek the fulfilment of their wishes.
