India’s GST collection for May 2025 hit Rs 2.01 lakh crore, up 16.4% from May 2024, driven by a 25.2% rise in imports and a 13.7% rise in domestic transactions.
In April 2025, India’s GST collections surged by 12.6 per cent to an all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore.
India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection for May 2025 reached Rs 2.01 lakh crore, marking a 16.4 per cent increase from the Rs 1.72 lakh crore collected in May 2024, according to data released by the Ministry of Finance on Sunday.
In April 2025, India’s GST collections surged by 12.6 per cent to an all-time high of Rs 2.37 lakh crore.
The year-on-year growth was driven by a 25.2 per cent increase in GST collected from imports and a 13.7 per cent rise from domestic transactions. Gross GST revenue from imports was Rs 51,266 crore, while domestic sources contributed Rs 1,49,785 crore.
Abhishek Jain, Partner and Head of Indirect Tax at KPMG in India, commented: “It’s encouraging to see GST collections once again cross the Rs 2 lakh crore mark. While last month’s spike was expected with year-end reconciliations, the consistency this month along with a 16 plus percent year-on-year growth points to strong underlying momentum and a recovery that’s clearly taking hold.”
Vivek Jalan, Partner at Tax Connect Advisory Services LLP, noted the significant growth in import-driven GST revenues. “With an approximate 10 per cent growth in domestic GST revenue and a 73 per cent growth in import GST revenues, it is clear that this month’s growth in GST revenue is driven by imports rather than domestic consumption. The year-to-date figures also show a similar trend, coupled with stagnant export refunds, indicating that import growth far exceeds export growth.”
Jalan suggested that this trend may be influenced by countries dumping their goods in India due to reduced sales in the USA, possibly referring to Trump 2.0 policies. He pointed out that India might need to consider implementing anti-dumping duties on various products in the near future.
In May, gross GST revenue reached Rs 4.37 lakh crore, showing a 14.3% increase compared to Rs 3.83 lakh crore collected during the same period last year.
After refunds, net GST revenue for May was Rs 1,73,841 crore, reflecting a 20.4% rise from Rs 1,44,381 crore collected in May 2024. Total refunds for the month stood at Rs 27,210 crore, down 4% year-on-year.
