Most of us wear shoes and socks all day, whether at work, school or while travelling. While shoes are often washed only after a few weeks, socks are worn much more frequently and need regular cleaning. Socks not only keep our feet protected inside shoes but also help absorb sweat and prevent odour.

But how many times can you wear a pair of socks before washing them? And what happens if you don’t wash them regularly? Here’s what health experts say.

According to experts, socks should be washed after every single use. This is because our feet sweat the most throughout the day, and socks stay in constant contact with them. The moisture from sweat creates the perfect environment for bacteria and fungus to grow. Wearing the same socks for multiple days without washing them can lead to irritation, odour, skin allergies, and even fungal infections. Dirty socks trap sweat and bacteria, which can cause unpleasant smells and damage to the skin and toenails.

One common infection caused by wearing unwashed socks is Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis). This fungal infection leads to itching, skin peeling, and painful blisters. It spreads quickly in damp, warm environments – exactly the conditions inside dirty socks and tight shoes.

Doctors recommend changing socks at least once a day. If you have sweaty feet or work in a hot environment, changing them twice a day is even better. After sports, workouts or any physical activity, socks should be changed immediately to prevent bacterial build-up.

Cotton socks are ideal as they absorb moisture and allow your skin to breathe. Avoid synthetic socks as they trap moisture and increase the risk of infections. Those with heavy sweating can also choose socks made with anti-bacterial fabrics or moisture-wicking technology.

Wearing dirty socks doesn’t just harm your feet. If there’s an open cut or wound, the bacteria or fungus can enter the bloodstream and cause serious infections. That’s why clean socks are essential not only for comfort and hygiene but also for your overall health.
