The problem of fever tends to worsen with changing weather. When our body fights off an infection, the internal temperature rises to help eliminate bacteria or viruses. In such cases, the body becomes hot, prompting many people to bathe in cold water to cool down. But is it safe to bathe during a fever? While some believe it could worsen the condition, others feel it brings relief. Let’s clear this confusion with expert advice.
Dr Sonia Rawat, Director of the Preventive Health and Wellness Department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi, told News18 that a person’s body temperature becomes higher than normal during a fever. The normal body temperature is around 98.6°F (37°C), and anything above 100°F can lead to symptoms like weakness, chills, headache, and sweating. Medicines help bring the fever down gradually.
According to Dr Rawat, bathing during a fever isn’t harmful, it depends on the individual’s condition. Bathing with lukewarm water during a fever can be helpful. It washes away sweat and bacteria, keeps the skin clean, and helps the person feel refreshed.
If the person is not severely weak and the fever isn’t too high, bathing is generally safe. However, if the fever is very high and the person is shivering, it’s best to avoid bathing. In such cases, a sponge bath can be a better alternative. This also helps maintain hygiene and control body temperature.
Experts say that if you’re too weak to bathe during a fever, wiping the body with a soft towel soaked in lukewarm water is a good option. Known as a sponge bath, it is especially effective for children, the elderly, or those with high fever. It cools the body and eases discomfort.
In summary, bathing during a fever does not worsen the illness. The decision to bathe depends on the severity of the fever and how the person feels physically.
