Nita Ambani, Chairperson of the Reliance Foundation and Mukesh Ambani’s wife, never misses out on opportunities to bring out her silk weaves. For most of her appearances, she opts for the timeless silk saree to make a statement. For her recent appearance at the swearing-in ceremony of President-Elect Donald Trump, Nita stunned in a royal azure coloured opulent Kanchipuram silk saree crafted by Swadesh.
Her wardrobe is a masterclass in timeless grace, especially for lovers of traditional Indian sarees. Over the years, Nita Ambani has championed Indian handlooms and supported artisans across the country, making her wardrobe as much about heritage as it is about fashion. Her appearances at global events have consistently highlighted India’s rich textile traditions. For her recent appearance, she opted for a Kanchipuram silk saree that was intricately woven with over 100 traditional motifs, each drawing inspiration from the spiritual and architectural grandeur of Kanchipuram’s temples.
In pictures shared by celebrity makeup artist Mickey Contractor, Nita was seen in a striking royal azure silk saree. The saree’s elegance lay in its simplicity, accented only by a delicately embroidered border. Designer Manish Malhotra described the piece as a custom creation featuring a multi-hued resham aari embroidery, subtly enhanced with silver and gold kasab and traditional zardozi work. Manish also shared pictures of Nita’s look on his social media. He wrote, “There’s beauty in simplicity… Mrs Nita Ambani. Beautiful and elegant in a custom Royal Azure silk saree, detailed with a multi-hued resham aari embroidered border, delicately accented with silver and gold kasab and zardozi, paired with a handwoven Banarasi brocade blouse, a vision of enduring grace and regal charm.”
Nita complemented the saree with a Banarasi brocade blouse in a classic checked weave. Her jewellery remained understated yet dazzling: diamond studs, a locket, bangles, and a ring, each piece reflecting her taste for quiet luxury. A small bindi on her forehead added the finishing touch, anchoring the entire look in cultural authenticity.
Banaras (Varanasi) was awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2009 for its iconic handwoven textiles. Historical texts like the Rig Veda mention “hiranya vastra” or golden cloth, hinting at the region’s ancient roots in luxury weaving. Influences from Sarnath’s stupas are said to have inspired the earliest brocade designs, transforming architecture into wearable art.
