Rajvansh Singh, a resident of Sadar block in Giridih district, Jharkhand, is a retired schoolteacher who turned to gardening after retirement. What started as a way to pass time and stay healthy has now become a source of steady income. Today, his farm boasts over 900 fruit-bearing trees, including mango, guava, and lemon, thanks to his smart use of government schemes and improved farming techniques.

Second Inning

Rajvansh Singh retired from teaching in 2016. Soon after, he began cultivating fruit trees on his farmland. Over time, he planted more than 900 trees of mango, guava, lemon, and other seasonal fruits. His mango varieties include Langra, Jardalu, Himsagar, and Amrapali. For guava, he grows types like Allahabadi Safeda and Lalit, which start yielding fruits within six months.

Impressive Annual Yield

Every year, Rajvansh harvests about 10 quintals of mangoes and 10 quintals of guavas. Guava trees in particular bear fruit twice a year, significantly boosting his returns. In recognition of his farming efforts, he was awarded by the then Governor Draupadi Murmu in 2019.

A Thoughtful Shift From Vegetables To Fruits

Rajvansh says he initially cultivated vegetables, but the hard physical labour became difficult to manage after retirement. That’s when he turned to fruit farming, which is less labour-intensive and more sustainable for his age.

Government Support And Smart Farming

He sourced quality saplings from Palundu (Chhattisgarh) and Bhagalpur, and made use of various government schemes to support his transition. With the help of high-tech farming methods, he has not only improved productivity but also ensured better-quality produce.

Sharing Knowledge With Others

Rajvansh Singh is now helping other farmers by sharing his knowledge and encouraging them to consider fruit farming as a viable and profitable alternative. His story stands as a great example of how retirement can be the beginning of a rewarding new chapter.
