Tesla CEO Elon Musk received no salary, bonus, or stock awards from the company in 2024, making him the lowest-paid chief executive among all S&P 500 firms, says a report.

Elon Musk’s lack of compensation comes after a Delaware Chancery Court in January 2024 struck down his Tesla’s $56-billion compensation package.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, received no salary, bonus, or stock awards from the company in 2024, making him the lowest-paid chief executive among all S&P 500 firms, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Confirming the news, Musk reacted in a post on X, “Zero for seven years, despite increasing the value of the company >2000%.”

Elon Musk has not received any compensation for 2023 or 2024, the company has also said in its filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Why Is Elon Musk Not Receiving Any Compensation From Tesla?

Musk’s lack of compensation comes after a Delaware Chancery Court in January 2024 struck down his $56 billion compensation package, which had been approved in 2018 and tied to highly ambitious performance milestones.

The court ruled that Tesla’s board failed to act independently and that the approval process was heavily influenced by Musk. “Musk dictated the terms of the compensation plan,” Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick had stated in the ruling.

Tesla has since proposed a re-vote on the package and plans to shift its legal base from Delaware to Texas.

Musk’s Wealth Still Tied to Tesla’s Stock

Although he received no pay in 2024, Musk remains Tesla’s largest shareholder, with an estimated 13% stake in the company. His net worth, therefore, continues to be tied to Tesla’s market performance rather than traditional executive compensation.

Despite recent stock volatility, Tesla shares have rebounded somewhat in 2025, helping Musk retain his place among the world’s wealthiest individuals, though through equity holdings rather than salary.

According to Forbes’ Real-Time Billionaire List, Elon Musk is the richest person in the world with a net worth of $420.6 billion.

Who Is The Top-Paid CEO?

Musk’s $0 compensation places him at the bottom of the S&P 500 CEO pay rankings, in contrast to the highest earners. According to data compiled by Equilar and reported by The Wall Street Journal, Broadcom CEO Hock Tan was the highest-paid CEO in 2024, receiving more than $161 million in total compensation.
