A powerful new public-private partnership is helping India take significant strides towards a cleaner, greener future. In a major sustainability initiative, global beauty brand Garnier has teamed up with the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban to combat plastic waste, focusing on reducing, reusing, and recycling through community engagement and infrastructure development.
The partnership supports the government’s RRR (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Centers—key collection hubs for recyclable waste—and was launched with a series of beach clean-up drives across cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Vizag, Pondicherry, Puri, Goa, Mangalore, and Kasargod.
Actor and environmental advocate John Abraham, Garnier’s long-time brand ambassador, joined volunteers at the Chennai beach clean-up, saying,
“Through individual and collective actions—like segregating waste, recycling, and reusing—we can build a cleaner India. I’m proud to support this initiative and encourage everyone to take one green step each day.”
Roopa Mishra, Joint Secretary and National Mission Director, Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, applauded the collaboration, “This partnership is a strong example of how government and private sectors can come together to drive real impact in waste management and sustainability.”
As part of its ongoing Green Beauty program, Garnier has also partnered with Plastics for Change since 2020 to collect and recycle plastic waste. This collaboration has not only led to the collection of nearly 900 tonnes of plastic to date, but has also improved the livelihoods of approximately 15,000 informal waste collectors and their families, providing access to education, healthcare, housing, and stable incomes.
In 2022, Garnier launched its first plastic waste collection center in Chennai, followed by the rollout of collection kiosks across 20 prominent locations in Mumbai, Chennai, and Delhi—urging consumers to take their #OneGreenStep.
Ajay Simha, General Manager, Garnier India, shared, “Sustainability is at the core of our mission. Our collaboration with Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban reflects our deep commitment to creating lasting environmental and social change. Through responsible collection, recycling, and community empowerment, we’re actively reducing ocean-bound plastic and inspiring collective action.”
The initiative is part of Garnier’s broader sustainability goals, which include eliminating animal testing (all products have been certified cruelty-free since 2021), increasing transparency, and reducing environmental impact across its entire supply chain.
