Many people often associate burning feet with heat and ignore it. However, it is important to understand the causes to find the appropriate treatment.

Burning Causes

One major cause of a constant burning sensation is peripheral neuropathy, where the nerves in the feet become weak or damaged. Diabetes is often the main culprit. Other causes include vitamin B12 deficiency, excessive alcohol consumption, thyroid disorders, and chemotherapy. When nerves weaken, symptoms such as burning, numbness, and tingling occur in the soles.

Another common cause is a fungal infection called athlete’s foot, which arises due to excessive sweating and poor hygiene. This infection can spread through damp socks, closed shoes, and public places like swimming pools or bathrooms, causing itching, burning, red rashes, and sometimes a foul odour.

Allergies to shoe materials, soaps, lotions, or chemicals can also trigger burning sensations, sometimes accompanied by redness, swelling, or blisters.

To prevent burning feet, lifestyle and diet improvements are essential. Diabetics should keep their blood sugar under control, take sufficient vitamin B12, and exercise regularly to promote good blood circulation. Maintaining foot hygiene, wearing light cotton socks, and keeping feet dry also help.

Several home remedies can provide relief from burning sensations in the feet such as soaking your feet in lukewarm water with rock salt, applying aloe vera gel, or massaging with coconut or mustard oil. Apple cider vinegar and turmeric may also aid in reducing vein swelling. Dipping your feet in cold water can offer immediate relief.

However, if the burning persists, worsens at night, interferes with walking, or is accompanied by swelling or wounds, seek medical advice promptly. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent further complications.
