Bruce Springsteen admits his presence on set contributed to additional stress for Jeremy Allen White playing him in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere.
Springsteen opened up about the making of the biopic in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, recalling watching his life being depicted in a film.
“I’m sure it was much worse for the actor than for me,” he said, adding that White “was very, very tolerant of me the days that I would appear on set.”
“So the days that I got out there, he was wonderfully tolerant with me being there,” he recalled. “And it was just fun. It was enjoyable.”
Springsteen remembered drawing healthy on-set boundaries with the actor, telling White to “give me the look and I’m on my way home” if he ever got in the way of a scene.
The singer noted that he tried to avoid days when some of the “really deeply personal” parts of his life were being acted out.
“There’s some unusualness to it because the movie involves, in some ways, some of the most painful days of my life,” he said.
When those tough moments came up, Springsteen said he would “just stay at home” because he wanted the actors “to feel completely free, and I didn’t want to get in the way.”
Springsteen added that he was otherwise supportive throughout the production, especially whenever the film’s writer-director Scott Cooper “wanted or needed me there for anything, I would try to make it.”
Deliver Me From Nowhere—produced by 20th Century Studios—released its official trailer on June 18. The film opens in theaters on October 24.
