Lizards are often spotted crawling on the walls or ceilings of homes. But when it comes to black lizards, fear and curiosity tend to rise. Many people believe that black lizards are venemous or that their bite could be life-threatening. To clear up this confusion, Local18 spoke to Dr Yashvendra Verma, Associate Professor in the Department of Toxicology at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.
Are Black lizards Venemous?
Dr Verma clarified that many species of lizards are found across the world. In India, the lizards commonly seen in homes, whether black, brown, or yellow, are not venemous and generally do not bite. He emphasised that there is no danger to human life from Indian house lizards, and they are not toxic like snakes.
However, he issued a warning: if a lizard accidentally falls into food, it can be dangerous. Contaminated food may cause food poisoning. So, it’s important to keep food covered and avoid consuming anything that seems suspicious.
venemous Lizard Species
While Indian house lizards are harmless, Dr Verma mentioned that some lizard species found in other countries are indeed venomous. For example, the Gila Monster from South America and the Mexican Beaded Lizard from Mexico are considered venemous . In India, dangerous lizard species may exist in dense forests or hilly regions, but these are not typically found in areas where the general public resides.
Dr Verma explained that in the rare case of a lizard bite, there’s no need to panic. However, it’s still advisable to consult a doctor. Lizards may carry fungal infections on their skin, which can lead to skin issues upon contact.
Precautions to Take
- Always keep food items covered.
- Maintain cleanliness in the house, especially if there’s a noticeable increase in lizard activity.
- People with skin allergies or sensitivities should consult a doctor if exposed.
