Summer brings a flood of mangoes to the Indian market, each with its distinct flavour. But in Bhopal, some mangoes stand apart, not just for their taste, but also for their exclusivity and innovation. Jawahar Mango Garden, the largest mango orchard in the city, cultivates over 90 rare and exotic mango varieties, attracting even international visitors.

This year, however, mango exports have taken a hit. According to Sami, a cultivator at Jawahar Bagh, their shipments to Turkey were halted due to tensions between India and Pakistan.

The Largest Mango Orchard Of Bhopal

The garden, which houses 94 mango types including Langra, Chaunsa, Dussehri, Noorjahan, Hapus, Amrapali, and Nargis, normally supplies high-demand varieties for export before the peak season.

Mangoes here range in price from Rs 50 to Rs 2200 per kilogram. While some varieties sold online or in metro cities fetch exorbitant prices, the same premium fruits can be bought directly at the garden for a fraction of the cost. From May to July, a special shop outside Jawahar Bagh opens to the public, selling these rare mangoes. The three-month season draws crowds eager to sample the rich and unusual tastes that only Bhopal’s mangoes can offer.

A Variety Of Rare And Exotic Mangoes

Among the standout innovations is the Kahkasha mango, developed by Sami. Priced at Rs 2200/kg, this unique fruit combines the flavour profiles of seven different mango varieties. The cultivation process begins in January, involving careful monitoring and the use of special fertilisers including milk and saffron.

Other exotic offerings include the Peter England mango, with five distinct flavours and a GI tag, and Japan’s famed Miyazaki mango, both sold for Rs 1200/kg.
