Assurance from China: Wang Yi to address concerns on India's three key needs - Rare earths, fertilisers and tunnel boring machines

China has committed to address India’s three key concerns- rare earths, fertilisers and tunnel boring machines- as indicated by ANI sources.The sources revealed that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi provided assurance to External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar regarding China’s attention to India’s requirements in these three crucial areas.Wang Yi commenced his two-day visit to India on Monday.Jaishankar stated in his initial comments that discussions would encompass “economic and trade issues, pilgrimages, people-to-people contacts, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and bilateral exchanges”.The External Affairs Minister continued discussions on concerns previously raised during his China visit in July this year.Read more: Jaishankar meets Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in New Delhi; ‘Differences must not become disputes’In his opening dialogue with Wang Yi, Jaishankar emphasised the diverse aspects of India-China relations as neighbouring countries and significant global economies. He said, “It is also essential in this context that restrictive trade measures and roadblocks are avoided”. He additionally observed, “Stable and constructive ties between India and China are not only to our benefit, but that of the world as well. This is best done by handling relations on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity”.During Monday’s meeting in New Delhi, Jaishankar highlighted that differences should not escalate into disputes, nor should competition turn into conflict. He noted that the Chinese minister’s visit provided an opportunity to assess bilateral relations and discuss global developments and shared interests.The bilateral relationship deteriorated following Chinese military activities along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, resulting in a standoff. The tensions, which began in April-May 2020, saw partial relief through agreements on troop disengagement at certain friction points. Before the 2024 BRICS Summit, both nations agreed on LAC patrolling arrangements in eastern Ladakh, showing progress in tension reduction. Recent months have seen both countries taking steps to strengthen relations, with India emphasising the importance of de-escalation along the LAC.Given the changing global political landscape, including efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and US tariffs under President Donald Trump, Jaishankar emphasised the necessity of strengthening global economic stability.This visit precedes Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s anticipated China trip for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September.
