Amazon has reportedly told its corporate employees to relocate closer to their managers and teams or resign without any severance package.

Amazon has reportedly asked workers to shift to key locations such as Seattle, Arlington (Virginia), and Washington, D.C., which could require many to move across the country.

Amazon has told its corporate employees to relocate closer to their managers and teams or resign without any severance package, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the development.

The report says that workers have been asked to shift to key locations such as Seattle, Arlington (Virginia), and Washington, D.C., which could require many to move across the country.

The policy has triggered concern among Amazon employees, who are already anxious over ongoing job cuts and warnings that artificial intelligence (AI) could reduce their roles in the coming years.

According to a source quoted by Bloomberg, the new directive could affect thousands of employees across various teams, with many mid-career staffers hesitant to move due to family and spousal career considerations.

Amazon operates satellite offices across the US including in major cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Austin. These locations offer some flexibility to employees in choosing where to live.

‘Decide in 30 Days or Leave’

One employee told Bloomberg that the message was delivered during a team meeting. Their manager reportedly informed them that they had 30 days to decide about relocating. If they choose not to relocate, they would then get 60 days to either resign or begin the relocation process.

Crucially, the manager said that “there would be no severance for employees who resigned in lieu of relocating”.

What Amazon Says

The new policy has been a topic of intense discussion in Amazon’s internal Slack channels, with employees sharing information and expressing uncertainty about the sudden push.

Responding to Bloomberg, an Amazon spokesperson said, “For more than a year now, some teams have been working to bring their teammates closer together to help them be as effective as possible, but there isn’t a one-size-fits all approach and there hasn’t been a change in our approach as a company.”

The spokesperson added, “We hear from the majority of our teammates that they love the energy from being located together, and whenever someone chooses to or is asked to relocate, we work with them to offer support based on their individual circumstances.”

AI-Driven Layoffs on the Horizon

This development follows comments by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy earlier this week, in which he said that generative artificial intelligence is likely to reduce Amazon’s corporate workforce in the coming years.

“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today, and more people doing other types of jobs,” Jassy said in a message to employees. “It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect that this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we get efficiency gains from using AI extensively across the company.”
