A fitness coach warned ageing women of the repercussions of not taking up strength training in their fitness journey.
Women above 35 may suffer muscle loss early without weightlifting.
Lifting weights and strength training are often touted as a man’s domain and are considered counterproductive for women, causing them to appear bulky. Breaking such myths, a fitness coach has underlined gymming and strength exercises as an important tool to retain muscle mass in female bodies. While women tend to lean towards Pilates or cardio, fitness coach Tara LaFerrara came up with a reality check, sending a warning signal for those over 35 who don’t strengthen their muscles with regular training.
A strength and mobility coach who regularly shares fitness advice on her Instagram handle, LaFerrara says women must add weightlifting to their fitness journey, especially once they start nudging past 35, and start experiencing growing weakness and fatigue after a prolonged day of work. Women should take to strength training, LaFerrara emphasises, calling it a sign of inner problems and not just ageing.
“If you are a woman over 35 and you are not doing any sort of strength training, you are in for a rude awakening. I am talking about the moment that your body starts to slow down, get weaker and feel like you hurt more. Spoiler alert, it is not just ageing, it is muscle loss, and it starts way earlier than you think,” LaFerrara said in a video.
“After the age of 35, we start losing muscle every single year and that muscle is so important because it is your metabolism, your bone density, your energy and just the ability to bounce back when life throws things at you.”
“Cardio is not enough, pilates is not enough, you need to lift, squat, push, pull, press,” she said. “It’s not about getting bulky and muscular. It is about getting strong enough to handle ageing on your terms, so if you are tired of feeling like your body is working against you, start working with it, pick up some weights, your future self will thank you.”
According to LaFerrara, sweating over a session of cardio or moving pilates may have their benefits, but strength training is the real game-changer for women’s bone and muscle health. The fitness coach believes it’s imperative for women crossing 35 to understand the wider impact of lifting and muscle training.
