Skin problems tend to increase during the rainy season, with many people noticing more breakouts and their skin becoming dull or irritated. The high humidity during monsoon leads to excess sweating, which is often blamed for triggering pimples. However, according to experts, there are several other reasons behind this issue. Factors like sweat, oil, dirt, and bacterial growth all contribute to increased acne during this time.
Dr Yugal Rajput, Assistant Professor and Dermatologist at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, told News18 that during the monsoon, the skin produces more sweat and oil. This combination settles on the skin’s surface, and when it gets trapped in the pores, it creates a breeding ground for bacteria, leading to pimples.
Rainwater may also carry impurities or pollutants, which can cause infections and worsen skin conditions. Not properly cleaning wet skin can also aggravate acne, especially in people who are already prone to breakouts.
Skin Care During Monsoon
Dr Rajput emphasised the importance of keeping the skin clean and dry during the monsoon. He recommends washing the face at least twice a day using a mild face wash to remove sweat, oil, and dirt. After getting wet in the rain, one should gently pat the face dry with a clean cloth and avoid rubbing wet clothes on the skin.
Choosing the right moisturiser is equally important. It should be light and non-greasy. Avoid using oily or heavy skincare products that may clog pores. Also, steer clear of fried and oily foods during the rainy season, as they can increase sebum (oil) production in the skin.
Diet Matters
A healthy diet plays a key role in maintaining clear skin. Include plenty of fresh fruits, green vegetables, and water in your daily routine to keep the body and skin hydrated. Staying hydrated helps flush out toxins from the body, which in turn supports clearer skin and reduces the risk of breakouts.
It’s best to avoid junk food during this season, as it can disrupt digestion and trigger skin issues. If pimples become painful, swollen, or take a long time to heal, it is advised to consult a dermatologist.
Home Remedies That May Help
Some natural remedies can also help manage mild acne during the rainy season. Applying neem paste, aloe vera gel, or turmeric paste on the face can reduce inflammation and fight bacteria.
Spraying rose water can also soothe the skin and offer a refreshing feel. However, people with sensitive skin should consult a skincare expert before trying any home remedy.
With the right care, attention, and hygiene practices, monsoon-related acne can be effectively managed, leaving the skin clean, fresh, and healthy.
