Early action can prevent long-term complications even in the seemingly healthy.

A growing number of people in their 20s and 30s are being diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions once considered rare in younger age groups

Heart disease is no longer just a concern for older adults. A growing number of people in their 20s and 30s are being diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions once considered rare in younger age groups. Sedentary lifestyles, poor dietary habits, high stress, and increasing rates of obesity are all contributing to this alarming trend. Experts are now urging millennials and Gen Z to consider early heart screenings as a vital part of preventive health care.

“With the increasing occurrence of heart disease in young adults, an early check is essential,” says Dr. Rockey Katheria, Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, Manipal Hospital Varthur.

“Most causes of heart disease including coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and valve problems tend to progress quietly and without symptoms at first. Screenings can quickly identify these conditions so that early intervention can take place, vastly improving long-term outcomes.”

Who Should Get Screened?

Some people may be at a higher risk and should consider heart screenings even if they feel fine. According to Dr. Katheria, you should consider a heart screening if you have:

A family history of early heart disease (before age 55 in men or 65 in women)

High blood pressure or cholesterol

Diabetes or insulin resistance

A history of smoking

A sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, or are overweight

A prior history of gestational diabetes or preeclampsia (for women)

Symptoms like fatigue, chest pain, palpitations, or fainting without a clear cause

Early detection allows for lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medical intervention to reduce the risk of future heart attacks or strokes.

The Millennial Wake-Up Call

“It’s easy to put work and social life ahead of health in your 20s and 30s,” says Dr. Nikhil Sontakke, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Manipal Hospital Goa.

“But heart disease is becoming more common in younger adults even those under 40 so it’s important to start focusing on heart health early.”

He notes that in 2022, more than 940,000 people in the U.S. died from heart disease. Increasingly, young adults are being diagnosed with conditions like coronary artery disease, heart failure, arrhythmias, and structural heart disease. Common symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, and even unusual signs like nausea or back pain—especially in women should never be ignored.

“Many young people don’t even know they have high blood pressure until it’s too late. Chronic stress and lack of sleep, which are rampant in this age group, only make things worse,” he adds.

What Tests Should You Consider?

Recommended cardiac screening tests include:

ECG (Electrocardiogram)

Echocardiography

Treadmill Stress Test

Lipid Profile

HbA1c (for blood sugar levels)

Hemoglobin levels

Advanced lipid markers like Lp(a), Homocysteine, Apo A, and Apo B

Lifestyle Steps for Heart Health

Both doctors agree that prevention is powerful. Dr. Sontakke recommends focusing on five key areas:

Maintain a healthy weight

Exercise regularly

Eat balanced meals

Avoid tobacco and vaping

Prioritize good sleep

Also, knowing your family’s medical history and scheduling annual health checkups are crucial steps toward long-term wellness. “Put screening first,” concludes Dr. Katheria.

“It’s a simple approach that can reduce your risk of heart disease. You can take proactive steps to protect your heart health—starting today.”
