A gastroenterologist associated with the Harvard Medical School has recommended adding a particular substance to your morning routine to derive various health benefits.
This simple ingredient can enhances bowel movement, and also slow sugar absorption.
While most of us undoubtedly start our day with a hot cup of coffee or tea, the effect of this routine on our digestive health remains debatable. Research has found no strong link between gut issues and coffee, be it in the case of coffee consumed on an empty stomach or a non-empty one.
However, there is one substance that a credible expert believes can have multiple health benefits if taken with the morning coffee. Dr Trisha Pasricha, gastroenterologist at Harvard Medical School, suggested mixing a spoonful of psyllium husk into the coffee or water that one consumes at the very beginning of their day. The recommendation from her came during an interview with The Washington Post. The goodness of psyllium husk mainly stems from the fact that it is a good source of fibre for the body.
Here are some of the health benefits associated with psyllium husk.
Being a soluble fibre, psyllium husk is known for aiding bowel movement. It works by absorbing water in the digestive tract, forming a gel-like substance that ultimately results in softer and bulkier stools. Another major health benefit of consuming psyllium husk is that it slows down the entry of sugar into the bloodstream. This is particularly beneficial for diabetic and pre-diabetic people. The mechanism behind this relies on the gel resulting from the consumption of psyllium. In the absence of this substance, sugars get absorbed into the bloodstream more easily.
Psyllium husk is also considered helpful in weight management as the gel-like mass formed in the digestive tract can make you feel full for longer periods. This eliminates the desire to snack frequently between meals. It is also considered a good agent for the removal of cholesterol from the body. Regular consumption of psyllium has been linked to improved levels of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). Overall cardiovascular health is known to benefit from the intake of psyllium.
