UPI On International Numbers: IDFC First Bank has introduced a new service allowing Non-resident Indian (NRI) customers to use the unified payment interface (UPI) for transactions in India using their international mobile numbers.
Available to NRE and NRO bank account holders, this service is free and can be accessed from 12 countries: Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, United Arab Emirates (UAE), United Kingdom, and United States of America (USA).
Details Of New NRI UPI Payments Feature Launched By IDFC Bank
In its June 25, 2025 press release, IDFC First Bank announced that NRE/NRO customers can link their bank accounts with any UPI-enabled apps (such as PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm) using their international mobile numbers. For instance, NRIs living in Dubai, UAE with an Etisalat or Du mobile SIM can use Google Pay for making payments in India if they have an IDFC First Bank NRE or NRO account.

The bank highlighted several key benefits of this new feature: – Use of International Mobile Numbers: NRIs can link their NRE/NRO accounts to UPI without needing an Indian SIM. – Instant Payments: Send and receive money or pay bills instantly using QR codes, UPI IDs, or mobile numbers. – Zero Fees: UPI transactions are free of any charges. – Secure Transactions: The service offers the same security standards as domestic UPI transactions.
How To Use UPI With International Mobile Numbers
IDFC First Bank explained that NRIs can utilize the UPI facility even from abroad for transactions within India without any foreign exchange charges.
