The Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 3 this year. Every year, thousands of devotees undertake this pilgrimage to seek the blessings of Baba Barfani. This journey is significant both spiritually and physically, as it involves trekking to the sacred cave situated at an altitude of around 14,000 feet. Prior registration and physical preparation are crucial for this demanding journey.
Given the high altitude and challenging terrain, the Amarnath Yatra poses health risks, particularly due to the danger of high altitude sickness. To ensure a safe and comfortable pilgrimage, the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board has issued a health advisory for all participants.
What Is High Altitude Sickness?
The holy cave of Amarnath is located at an elevation where the oxygen level is significantly lower. This can lead to symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, disturbed sleep, vision issues, urinary and bowel problems, and even paralysis on one side of the body. If not treated promptly, these symptoms can become fatal within hours.
Health Advisory To Prepare
According to the advisory, it is crucial to prepare the body for high-altitude trekking well in advance. Here are the key recommendations:
- Daily Walking: Start walking 4-5 km every morning or evening a few weeks before the journey.
- Practice Yoga And Pranayama: These help improve your body’s oxygen intake and make breathing easier at high altitudes.
- Consult Your Doctor: If you have any pre-existing health conditions, speak to a medical professional before the trip.
- Acclimatise Properly: Walk slowly, take breaks, and allow your body time to adjust to the altitude.
- Avoid Overexertion: Stick to your physical limits and take rest when needed.
During The Journey
- Stay Hydrated: Drink at least 5 litres of water or fluids daily to prevent dehydration and headaches.
- Eat Wisely: Include foods rich in carbohydrates to maintain energy and keep blood sugar levels stable.
- Carry Portable Oxygen: It can be extremely helpful if you face difficulty breathing.
- Descend If Unwell: If you experience any symptoms of altitude sickness, do not continue to climb. Descend immediately for your safety.
- Nearest Medical Centre: Medical Assistance is available every 2 km along the route. If you feel unwell, visit the nearest medical centre without delay. If you notice a change in your health condition after receiving your medical certificate, consult a doctor before proceeding.
Important Precautions
- Never ignore symptoms of high altitude sickness.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and smoking, as they further weaken the body at high altitudes.
- Don’t rely solely on an ill travel companion’s judgement, as sickness can impair decision-making.
- Always take advice from other group members or your guide.
With proper preparation and awareness, the Amarnath Yatra can be a safe and spiritually fulfilling experience.
