Google co-founder Sergey Brin made headlines this week after gifting nearly $700 million worth of Alphabet Inc. shares to three philanthropic organisations, according to a statement from his family office, Bayshore Global.
The largest share of the donation — about 3.2 million Alphabet shares split evenly between Class A and Class C stock — went to Catalyst4, a non-profit founded by Brin in 2021. Catalyst4 focuses on funding research into central nervous system disorders and finding solutions to climate change.
Brin also directed over 580,000 Alphabet shares to his family foundation, and gifted around 282,000 shares to the Michael J Fox Foundation, which supports Parkinson’s disease research.
The donation, initially disclosed in a regulatory filing on Wednesday without naming the recipients, was valued at more than $500 million at that time. With share prices taken into account, the total gift is now estimated at close to $700 million.
At 51, Brin remains one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, ranking 10th globally with a net worth of $143 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
What Are Class A and Class C Shares?
Brin’s donation included Alphabet Class A and Class C shares, with the 3.2 million shares to Catalyst4 split evenly between the two types. Class A shares carry voting rights, giving shareholders influence over corporate decisions. Class C shares do not have voting power but are otherwise economically identical to Class A. The distinction allows company founders like Brin to maintain greater control over the company while still distributing equity.
