Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic condition caused by a point mutation (sickle cell variant) in the beta-globin gene, which produces sickle haemoglobin (HbS). This affects the red blood cells and causes symptoms like recurrent painful crises, fatigue, jaundice, thrombotic events, and organ complications in severe situations. Medications and medical interventions are important considerations in managing sickle cell patients. However, a healthy lifestyle is equally important to improve overall quality of life and reduce both the number and severity of crises.
Dr. Mallikarjun Kalashetty, Consultant – Haematology, Haemato Oncology & Bone Marrow Transplantation, Manipal Hospital Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, shares how sickle cell disease (SCD) can be managed by incorporating some lifestyle changes.
Medical Management
Regular Medical Check-up: It is important to have routine check-ups with a haematologist or a qualified physician. They can monitor haemoglobin levels to recognize any early signs of complications (such as pneumonia, organ damage, or higher stroke risk) and allow the treatment plan to be adjusted appropriately.
Essential Medicines: Various medicines form the core of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) treatment and can substantially improve the quality of life for SCD patients. There is no question that medicines should only be taken when a prescription is provided by the treating doctor after evaluation.
Vaccinations: People with SCD have a higher risk of getting infections because their spleens usually can’t work effectively. Therefore, vaccination becomes important to manage the condition.
With a proper care plan that allows for continued monitoring, patients who adhere to their medication and vaccinations can avoid or minimise many complications of SCD and live healthier lives.
Lifestyle-First Approach – Tips to Manage Sickle Cell Disease
While ongoing medical care and medications are important, making lifestyle changes is very important to help reduce complications and improve quality of life. Dr Kalashetty shares the most practical day-to-day tips to manage sickle cell disease, with a lifestyle-first approach.
Nutrition: A well-balanced diet containing enough nutrients supports immunity, red blood cell production, and overall health. Your dietary choices should include:
- Foods containing protein, vegetables, grains, legumes, and lean meats
- Folate-rich foods like lentils, citrus fruits, and fortified cereals are needed for red blood cell production
- Antioxidant-rich foods such as berries, tomatoes, and nuts reduce inflammation
- Avoid excessive junk food and sugary drinks that cause fatigue and poor immunity.
Hydration: Dehydration can cause red cells to sickle and trigger a painful episode.
- Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily, increasing during the warm weather and physical activity
- Carry a water bottle at all times.
- Consume fluids from fresh fruits, coconut water, and soups
- Avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks like soda and energy drinks
Stress Management: Practice deep breathing, meditation, or yoga daily, even if for just 10 minutes.
- Engage in hobbies or creative outlets like art, music, or journaling
- Talk to a counsellor or join support groups
- Maintain a regular routine and ensure adequate sleep every night (at least 8 hours).
Physical Activity: Physical activity promotes circulation, increases strength, and uplifts your mood.
- Engage in lower-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or cycling
- Exercise regularly, but don’t overdo it
- Always warm up before exercising and cool down after
- Avoid exercising in extreme temperatures
Living with Sickle Cell Disease requires consistent care and attention, but with a few simple lifestyle changes – alongside medical guidance, caregiver support, and regular follow-ups – patients and families can take a holistic approach that significantly enhances quality of life.
