In the scorching deserts of Rajasthan, when the sun beats down on the land and heatwaves drain every bit of energy, nature offers a unique gift: the Pilu fruit. This small, often overlooked fruit grows on the Jaal tree in dry regions like Jalore, Barmer, and Jaisalmer.

Locally known as Angoor or Mawa, and referred to Sheetal Phal (the cooling fruit) in Ayurveda, Pilu offers not only relief from the heat but also internal strength to combat seasonal ailments.

One remarkable trait of this desert fruit is that the hotter the weather gets, the sweeter and more beneficial it becomes. The Jaal tree thrives during the peak summer months of May and June, or the Indian months of Jyeshtha and Ashadha, when most other trees begin to wither.

Ayurvedic Benefits

According to Ayurvedic expert Dr Damodar Chaturvedi, Pilu is rarely consumed raw. Its pulp is dry and sharp in texture, so it is best eaten after being shade-dried or mixed with a cooling drink. In Ayurvedic terms, Pilu helps reduce liver heat, improves digestion, and maintains the body’s water balance.

Beyond that, it helps regulate the menstrual cycle in women, supports cognitive development in children, and even promotes hair growth. In short, this tiny fruit offers a wide range of health benefits packed in its juicy flesh.

Not Just for Humans; Animals Love It Too

As the locals say, “Jaal ri chaya, Peelu ro swad… thari loo ni lage baad” meaning that after enjoying Pilu, even the harshest heatwaves lose their sting. The most fascinating part is that while many trees dry up during peak summer, the Jaal tree stays green and continues to bear fruit.

It’s not just a boon for humans, birds, cattle, and other wildlife also rely on this tree for nourishment and shade during the hottest months.

Pilu is not just a fruit, it’s a symbol of resilience and a refreshing oasis in Rajasthan’s fiery summers. It is the desert’s very own gift of health, hope, and harmony.
