Income Tax Return Online Filing 2025: The Income Tax Department has activated the online utility for e-filing income tax returns for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). Eligible taxpayers can now start filing their ITRs through the official e-filing portal. Currently, only ITR-1 and ITR-4 forms are enabled for online filing. Taxpayers needing to file ITR-2 or ITR-3 must wait until those forms are enabled.

ITR-1 vs ITR-4: Key Differences

Choosing the correct ITR form is crucial for compliance and avoiding penalties.

ITR-1 (Sahaj)

Can be filed by a resident individual whose:

  • Total income is up to ₹50 lakh.
  • Income is from salary, one house property, family pension, and other sources (including interest income).
  • Long-term capital gains (LTCG) up to ₹1.25 lakh under Section 112A.
  • Agricultural income up to ₹5,000.

ITR-4 (Sugam)

For resident individuals, HUFs, and firms (other than LLP) with:

  • Total income up to ₹50 lakh.
  • Income from business/profession under presumptive taxation (Sections 44AD, 44ADA, or 44AE).
  • Income from salary/pension, one house property, agricultural income up to ₹5,000.
  • LTCG up to ₹1.25 lakh under Section 112A.
  • Other sources (excluding lottery/race horses), like interest from savings/deposits, family pension, interest on enhanced compensation, unsecured loan interest, etc.

Documents Required for ITR Filing

  • PAN and Aadhaar Card
  • Form 16 (issued by employers)
  • Form 26AS and AIS (Annual Information Statement)
  • Bank account details
  • Interest certificates
  • Investment proofs for deductions (if opting for old tax regime)
  • Property-related documents (if applicable)
  • Capital gains statements (if any)
  • Foreign income/assets details (if applicable)
  • Business/freelance income records
  • Advance/self-assessment tax challans
  • The previous year’s ITR and any old tax notices

When Will You Receive Form 16?

Form 16 is vital for salaried taxpayers. Employers must issue it by June 15, 2025. While e-filing has begun, tax experts recommend waiting for Form 16 before filing.

How to File ITR Online: Step-by-Step

Though online e-filing is expected to open soon, here’s the general process:

Register or Log In

  • Visit the e-filing portal and log in using PAN (User ID) and password.
  • New users can register with PAN, Aadhaar, and contact details.

Choose the Correct ITR Form

  • Select the appropriate form (e.g., ITR-1 for salaried individuals).
  • Go to the ‘Income Tax Return’ option under the e-File tab.

Pre-fill and Validate

  • Review and edit auto-filled data from Form 26AS and AIS.
  • Validate income, deductions, and tax credits.

Upload Documents

  • Typically, documents like Form 16 are not uploaded but should be used to verify accuracy.

Submit and Verify

  • Complete filing and e-verify using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, DSC, or bank account EVC.
