Clinical and sports nutritionist and diabetes educator Rajat Jain explains that while protein plays a vital role in building and repairing the body, too much of it can put unnecessary pressure on the system. Overconsumption can lead to symptoms such as constipation, constant thirst, bad breath, weight gain and fatigue. He also shared five signs of excessive protein consumption and their solutions.

Digestive Problems

Consuming too much protein, especially from animal sources, can lead to constipation or bloating, particularly if fibre intake is low.

Solution: Add fibre-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains to your diet to support healthy digestion.

Constant Thirst

High protein intake puts pressure on the kidneys, which can cause dehydration and make you feel constantly thirsty.

Solution: Drink plenty of water and keep your protein intake within the recommended range which is 1.2–2 grams per kilogram of body weight.

Bad Breath

A diet high in protein and low in carbohydrates may push the body into a state of ketosis, where fat is used for energy. This process can cause unpleasant breath.

Solution: Balance your diet by including complex carbohydrates like oats and sweet potatoes.

Unwanted Weight Gain

While protein is important, it also contains calories. Overeating protein may result in excess calorie intake, which gets stored as fat.

Solution: Be mindful of your total calorie consumption and match your protein intake to your energy requirements.

Fatigue or Slow Recovery

A diet focused only on protein and lacking in carbohydrates or healthy fats can reduce energy levels and slow down muscle recovery.

Solution: Eat a well-balanced diet that includes the right mix of protein, fats and carbohydrates to support overall health.
