A suspect is in custody after opening fire at a Target in Austin, killing three people, the Austin Police Department confirmed Monday afternoon.
The department said during a news conference that at about 2:15, officers responded to the shooting call at the Target located at 8601 Research Boulevard. Police said three victims were found after a suspect started shooting in the parking lot.
Police said two of those victims died at the scene, and the third died after being transported to a hospital.
Police said the suspect stole a car and fled the scene before crashing that vehicle. He then reportedly hijacked another car and took off, again.
According to police, the suspect, only described as a 32-year-old white man, was captured after a short police pursuit, in which he was tased and taken into custody.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said the suspect has a mental health history.
Road closures are in place as the investigation continues.
